The Brabham BT52B was a Formula One car designed for the Brabham team by longtime Brabham designer Gordon Murray for the second half of the 1983 Formula One season. It was the replacement of the earlier BT52.

DesignEdit

The BT52B was outwardly very similar to the previous BT52. It still retained the distinctive dart-shaped profile, with short sidepods at the rear and large wings. The two variants of the chassis could easily be distinguished as the colour scheme on the car was reversed. The wheelbase of the BT52B was shorter as was the axel track compared to the BT52. Later in the year the car was updated to add Ferrari style 'winglets' on the rear wing in order to generate more downforce. The BT52B used the same BMW M12/13 turbo engine as the previous chassis.

Racing HistoryEdit

The BT52B was introduced at the British Grand Prix. Piquet went onto win back to back races at Italy and Europe with the BT52B along with three further podium finishes. Patrese also secured his first points score of the year at Germany, followed later in the year by a win at the final round. Over the course of the season it seemed Piquet would lose out on the title after a run of mid season bad luck. But after German company Wintershall developed a special batch of fuel and further development to the car was done, he became the first driver to win the world championship with a turbo engine, beating rival Alain Prost by 2 points. Brabham also secured third place in the Constructor's Championship behind Ferrari and Renault. The 1983 season proved to be the high water mark for the Brabham/BMW partnership as subsequent cars failed to yield the same results as the BT52 and 52B.
